Survey: women say lack of time hinders their hunting

More and more, women are considered an important cog in the future of hunting. In recent years, wildlife agencies and hunting and conservation groups have made concerted efforts to recruit women to hunting and fishing.

The National Wild Turkey Federation offers its Women in the Outdoors program for women, which offers one-day educational events and a quarterly magazine dedicated to women's outdoor interests. Becoming an Outdoor Woman (BOW) is another national program that has been offered in Minnesota by the Department of Natural Resources since 1994.

The turkey federation, with a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, paid for a 2005 survey of women's views on hunting. The random survey of 1,200 women was conducted by Responsive Management, a Virginia company that specializes in wildlife and outdoor recreation research.

Here are some of the findings:

• 8 percent have hunted in the past two years.

• 95 percent think its OK for women to hunt.

• 23 percent said they have hunted in the past.

•Of those who hunted in the past two years, 84 percent hunted deer, 16 percent hunted turkeys and 9 percent hunted pheasants.

•38 percent of those hunters said lack of time prevented them from hunting more.

•48 percent said someone in their family hunts.

•7 percent said they were interested in hunting in the next two years.
