Idaho Proposes Wolf Reduction

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has proposed a controversial plan to reduce wolf numbers in the Clearwater Region to save a dwindling elk herd. Elk numbers in the central part of the state have declined to one-third of numbers present in 1990, and declines continue. To counter the drop in elk numbers, wildlife officials have increased the harvest of black bears and mountain lions that prey on elk calves. Wolves, introduced into Idaho in 1995, prey primarily on older calves and adult elk, and have accounted for approximately half the known mortality of radio-collared adult elk.

Under the proposal, Department personnel would remove, by lethal means, up to 75 percent of the wolves in the Lolo Elk management Zone, and allow 20 to 40 percent of the wolves to remain.

Although Department personnel only would be authorized to remove wolves, the Department stated that their preference would be to authorize hunters to remove the offending animals. However, that is not an option until the wolf is formally ‘de-listed’ under provisions of the Endangered Species Act.
