Bulgaria is gaining popularity as hunting tourism destination
Hunting and angling are passions for life. There are nearly 140 000 registered hunters in Bulgaria. Another 3 000 foreign nationals visit the country each year. Bulgaria offers excellent accommodation for the lovers of hunting tourism.

“Interest in Bulgaria as a destination for hunting tourism has been growing, of late. We used to hold the leadership as destination for hunting red deer and boars. In the years of transition the sector sunk into a state of crisis, but in recent years we have been witnessing a revival of past traditions in the field. The world record in red deer hunting was set last year in Bulgaria. Our country, for example, has been lagging behind in applying state-of-the-art technologies. Hungary, for instance, has made serious investments in genetic development of the game, and snatched the world records for red deer and is very close to snatching the world record for the boar. Unfortunately, decision-making in Bulgaria is a priority of the state. Bulgaria abounds in fantastic locations for hunting tourism, and we should capitalize on this heritage.”
Most of the foreign hunters in Bulgaria come from Germany, France, Austria, Belgium and Spain. Few come from Italy and Greece. The latter are most keen on shooting wild fowl and small game. Domestic hunters are also more into this thing because of the less considerable investments it requires.
“Hunting is an expensive hobby and sport, especially for the rank-and-file Bulgarian,” Dessislav Delev comments. “Bulgarian hunting weapons’ dealers have lowered the prices on the domestic market. We already have hunting rifles for the price of EUR 250, which is a very reasonable price for Europe, but still somewhat high for Bulgaria, where the average monthly salary is EUR 150.”
