Marlin VS .17HMR and Mr Crow
#1
In my travels today...a flock of Crows were feeding
in a local grain field..just tilled over for the season
I drove in a tractor lane between some pines and tree line
allowing for me to make a 125 yd shot with my Marlin VS .17HMR
..This rifle has mounted a Weaver classic 4 x 16 scope with 1/8
min.target dot reticle and Harris BR bipods ....Eric...

Very nice shot! Cool rifle too. Here in Denmark we aren't allowed to hunt with a 17.hmr because of the bullet size (the smallest caliber allowed for hunting is a 22.). Really weird since the 17.hmr are way more effective and powerful on longer distances than a 22., which this topic is yet another good evidence of[Smile]

Hej Eric A!

Nice shot.[Big Grin]

Did the Crow died of a heart attack.[Smile]

I have shot a few Crows with my .220 Swift, and there is no doubt about where the bullet hit.

Det lyder rigtigt interesant. Jeg har altid været facineret af varminthunting.
-Hvordan er mulighederne for en udlænding (dansker)for at komme på PD-jagt?
-Skal man have amerikansk huntinglicence? Hvordan får man det?

På forhånd tak for hjælpen...

PS. Feel free too wright me in english.

Hej Mech Inf

Du are mest velkommen til komme på PD jagt med os.

You could go Prairie Dog hunting by yourself, but it takes time til
line up ranch land to shoot on. We have over the years got permission
til hunt from ranchers og land owners i Eastern Montana.
We leave Northern Michigan usually the first week af Juni og drive til Montana for about 8 to 10 dag. It takes us 2 dag out og 2dag back..så we get about 5 til 6 dag shooting time.
Private ranch lands..no hunting license is needed og public eller national grasslands ,license are required og kan be bought at local
hunting-fishing stores.
most af the time,we shoot på all private ranch lands

Other states require hunting licenses or a land use stamp to hunt PDs
but Montana is fairly easy on that issue...big game is another story.
PDs are considered a pest eller varmint..so they get shot og poisoned by ranchers..The Counties we hunt in are Petroleum og Garfield counties i Montana.
This is big country med few trees..mostly grasslands rolling hills with washouts. We use 4x4 pickup trucks med tire chains if we need dem.If it rains the back country can be impassable as the soil turns til en greasy mess..so tire chains are needed.
Petroleum county has 400 folk i it og that county is around 120 square miles.
so people kan be far and few .Beautiful rugged country though and a tur we look forword til each år.We put about 3600 miles på truck overall each tur.

I en tur 2år back ,we shot i 4 dag ..360 PDs..4 Badger 42 western jack rabbits..1 rattle snake..1 raakcoon en dozen eller so gophers og 1 porkpine....thats 2 hunters doing the shooting.[Wink]

Hi Eric,

I noticed that you are shooting (amongst others) a Marlin VS .17 HMR. I'm considering such a darling (or perhaps the VSF or VS-CF models). But.
When reading the review of the rifel at ChuckHawks.com it recieves rather mixed opinions.
Its accuracy is said to be unmatched by the contestors (Savage resp. Ruger), but even though they tried 3 different Marlins, they all suffered from a - in their opinion severe - flaw;
that the magasine dit not fit wery well -the magasine well was to big, allowing to incorrect attachment of the magazine (thereby jamming the gun) and, when correctly attached, it severel times mis-fed the cartridges, as it did not allign properly with the reciever, thereby also jamming the gun.
They had to keep a hand on the magazine when repeting the gun in order to try to secure a proper loading.

What is your experience with the gun?

Kind regards

Jens

Hej Jens

Jeg vil give dig min mening af som .17HMR riflen jeg nu egen, men jeg
skal skrive i englisk sprog.[Smile]

Jens...When the 17HMR came out roughly 4 to 5 years ago,I bought my 1st 17 off the net on Gunbroker.com. That rifle was a Marlin VS .17HMR as there was none available anywhere in the state where I live.Ammo was not to be found anywhere and I had a friend from the Chicago area find a few boxes for my new rifle.
Since that time,I now own 5 .17HMRs...call it a sickness[Big Grin][Big Grin].
Three are Marlin VS 17HMRs and 2 are Savage 17HMR with varmint weight barrels.
All 5 rifles are sighted in with a 75 yard zero..all are very accurate with bullet groups averaging under an inch easily at that range.
One thing I have noticed is the Marlins are a little more accurate than the Savages. Not by alot, maybe a 1/4inch or so..but still the Marlin Stainless/laminated stocked rifles are better.
Both Marlin and Savage have bad triggers..replacement triggers can be bought from Rifle Basics Company. The magasin on the Marlin can be a problem but I have used my Marlins enough to be awhere of the cartridge feeding issue and make sure my magasin snaps up into the receiver good. I think the problem was more of an issue when the rifle and clip where new.

A good friend of mine owns a CZ 452 i 17 HMR,that rifle is very accurate, but no more accurate than the Marlin from our observations at the range. He also owns a Ruger 77/22mag that he removed the pinned barrel and installed a Dan Lilja super match stainless .17HMR barrel..groups are bug hole at 100yds with that altered Ruger, but you got figure he has about 1000.00 USD into that rifle less the scope vs the Marlin at 320.00 USD.
We have also found through trying different 17 ammo..that hands down...the Hornady HMR .17 gr Varmint Express ammo was the most accurate i most of the 17s we own between myself and several shooting friends.
My humble opinion..buy the Marlin VS 917..Best bang for the penge![Wink][Wink]

Erik!

Thanks for you comments. I have ordered a marlin 917 VS. Would have been nice though with a never model - I surely like the new 917 VS CF - but the danish sole distributor (who apparently has exclusivity) does not intend to distribute it, and yet, Rex (Guns and Powder) has been hindered in importing it directly from the US[V][Sad!][xx(]

Never the less thanks for your comments - and I'm surely looking forwards to getting my new gun[Big Grin][8D]
