Weatherby Brings Back the Mark V® Ultramark™ as Its New Top-of-the-Line Traditional-Wood Rifle

November 2005

Weatherby’s Mark V® Ultramark™ returns in 2006 as the company’s new top-of-the-line traditional-wood production rifle for big game hunters and shooters.

“Last seen in Weatherby’s line from 1989 to 1991, the Ultramark returns this year as the bridge between our Mark V Deluxe and a custom-built rifle,” said Brad Ruddell, Weatherby’s vice president of sales and marketing. “The Mark V Deluxe is one of the most widely-recognized and copied rifles in the world. However, some customers have told us they want an even more deluxe Deluxe. That’s the Ultramark, which is all about great wood, with additional custom touches normally found only on rifles from our custom shop. This rifle is truly distinctive.”

Ultramark features a stock of highly figured, exhibition-grade walnut. The high-gloss, raised-comb Monte Carlo stock sports elaborate 20 LPI checkering and double spacers of maplewood and ebony on the buttstock, forend and pistol grip cap.

Weatherby craftsmen take great care to bed, fit and finish each of the Ultramark’s walnut stocks, which are hand selected. Steel rods are epoxied strategically in the action mortice and wrist to aid in strengthening the stock in these areas. The rosewood forend and pistol grip cap are specially selected to match color and grain, then shaped and finished to feel like a single piece of wood. The recoil pad is precisely fit and finished to match the contour of the stock for a custom look.

All metalwork is polished to a high-lustre finish. Other key features include:

Weatherby’s Mark V action, widely recognized as the world’s strongest bolt action. The short 54-degree bolt lift allows faster chambering on follow-up shots and greater bolt-to-scope clearance for fewer battered knuckles.
Adjustable trigger designed to be clean and crisp, and to break precisely for top-notch accuracy. The trigger features precise adjustments for sear engagement (factory set at .008 to .014) and let-off weight (factory set at about four pounds).
Krieger™ Criterion™ #2 contour button-rifled steel barrel. Krieger Criterion barrels are known for their quality and ability to maintain excellent accuracy.
Barrel length is 26 inches. Rifle weight is 8 1/2 pounds. Other specifications: overall length, 46 5/8 inches; rifling (twist) 1-10 inch; length of pull, 13 5/8 inches; drop at comb, 7/8-inch; drop at heel, 1 3/8 inches.

Ultramark is available in .257 Weatherby Magnum and .300 Weatherby Magnum. Right-hand model only. Like all Weatherby rifles, Ultramark is guaranteed to shoot a 1 1/2-inch 3-shot group at 100 yards from a cold barrel when used with premium or Weatherby factory ammunition

Weatherby’s New Vanguard® Model Offers ‘Deluxe’ Looks, Guaranteed Accuracy in Affordable Package

November 2005

Weatherby introduces the Vanguard® Deluxe, a wood-stock rifle designed to offer hunters and shooters an affordable combination of eye-catching good looks and superior shooting performance.

“Weatherby fans may recognize the Vanguard Deluxe as a close relative of the VGX rifle, which was last available in our line more than 10 years ago,” said Brad Ruddell, Weatherby’s vice president of sales and marketing. “The VGX was popular because it looked similar to our classic Mark V® Deluxe rifle and had many of the same features, but cost much less. Constant requests to bring back the VGX spurred us to develop the Vanguard Deluxe. In addition to its handsome looks, the Deluxe also offers guaranteed accuracy, like all the Vanguard rifles in our 2006 line.”

Nearly identical in appearance to the Mark V Deluxe, the Vanguard Deluxe features a raised-comb Monte Carlo walnut stock (gloss finish) with maplewood spacers and rosewood forend. A polished action and high-gloss blued metalwork further enhance the rifle’s looks.

Manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $865. Like all Vanguard rifles, the Deluxe comes with a factory-shot target to guarantee accuracy of a 1 1/2-inch or better 3-shot group at 100 yards from a cold barrel using premium (non-Weatherby calibers) or Weatherby factory ammunition.

Accuracy-enhancing features include:

A 24-inch, #2 contour cold hammer forged 4140 steel barrel with field crown.
Weatherby’s famous Monte Carlo design allows quick eye-to-scope alignment and faster target acquisition.
Adjustable trigger. The trigger can be precisely adjusted for let-off weight to match individual preferences (within factory pre-set minimums). Sear engagement adjustments must be performed by a Weatherby Service Center or qualified gunsmith.
The Vanguard action incorporates many of the strength and safety features of the Weatherby’s renowned Mark V action including:

A one-piece forged, fluted bolt body with three ports that allow high pressure gases to escape in the event of an accidental case rupture. The bolt sleeve completely enshrouds the rear of the action to provide protection from high-pressure gases and brass particles, should the case rupture.
A one-piece forged and machined receiver with integral recoil lug is designed for exceptional strength and structural integrity.
An easy-to-see cocking indicator provides an extra measure of safety.
Measuring 44 1/2 inches in overall length, the Vanguard Deluxe has a length of pull of 13 1/2 inches. Drop at comb, 5/8-inch; drop at heel, 1 1/8 inches. Weight is 7 3/4 pounds.

Vanguard Deluxe is available in .270 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, .257 Weatherby Magnum and .300 Weatherby Magnum. Right-hand model only.

Weatherby’s New Vanguard® SUB-MOA Varmint Rifle: Guaranteed Accuracy for Long Shots at Small Targets

November 2005

Weatherby has tightened the accuracy guarantee of its new Vanguard® SUB-MOA Varmint rifle for hunters and shooters who enjoy the challenge of taking long shots at small targets.

The Vanguard SUB-MOA Varmint comes with a factory-shot target to guarantee accuracy of a 3-shot group of .99 inch or less at 100 yards when used with specified Weatherby factory or premium (non-Weatherby calibers) ammunition.

“This is the only production varmint rifle that offers a guarantee of SUB-MOA accuracy and the test target to prove it,” said Brad Ruddell, Weatherby’s vice president of sales and marketing. “We hand- select each barreled action that meets or exceeds our tighter accuracy tolerances so varmint hunters can have absolute confidence in their rifle’s accuracy potential. They can also be confident in the SUB-MOA Varmint’s affordability, since it’s a Vanguard.”

The Vanguard SUB-MOA Varmint features a special hand-laminated composite stock with a beavertail vented forend. A CNC-machined aluminum bedding plate provides a solid, stable platform for the barreled action. Double swivel studs on the forearm allow use of the rifle with a bipod and sling.

The stock’s raised-comb Monte Carlo design allows for quick eye-to-scope alignment and fast target acquisition. Black spiderweb accents give the tan stock a distinctive look. A Pachmayr® Decelerator® recoil pad helps reduce felt recoil.

Other features include a 22-inch #3 contour cold hammer forged steel barrel, designed to maximize velocity in standard calibers while enhancing the rifle’s portablity. The barrel has a recessed target crown for consistent accuracy and protection of the rifling. Muzzle diameter is .740.

The trigger is adjustable. It can be precisely adjusted for let-off weight to match individual preferences (within factory pre-set minimums). Sear adjustments must be performed by a Weatherby Service Center or qualified gunsmith.

The Vanguard action incorporates many of the strength and safety features of the renowned Weatherby Mark V action including:

A one-piece forged, fluted bolt body with three ports that allow high pressure gases to escape in the event of an accidental case rupture. The bolt sleeve completely enshrouds the rear of the action to provide protection from high-pressure gases and brass particles, should the case rupture.
A one-piece forged and machined receiver with integral recoil lug is designed for exceptional strength and structural integrity.
An easy-to-see cocking indicator provides an extra measure of safety.
The Vanguard SUB-MOA Varmint has matte black metalwork which is non-reflective to eliminate game-spooking glare.

Measuring 41 1/2 inches in overall length, the Vanguard SUB-MOA Varmint has a length of pull of 13 5/8 inches. Drop at comb, 3/4-inch; drop at heel, 1 1/8 inches. Rifle weight is 8 1/4 pounds.

New Weatherby Vanguard® Varmint Special Rifle Offers Guaranteed Accuracy at Affordable Price

November 2005

Calling all varmint hunters who require a highly accurate and affordable rifle…Weatherby’s new Vanguard® Varmint Special rifle offers guaranteed accuracy at a suggested retail price of only $587.

“Other than our new Vanguard SUB-MOA Varmint, the Vanguard Varmint Special is the only production varmint rifle that comes with a factory-shot target and written accuracy guarantee,” said Brad Ruddell, Weatherby’s vice president of sales and marketing. “A distinctive tan stock with black spiderwebbing gives the rifle a look that appeals to many varmint hunters, and the $587 price should appeal to everyone.”

Weatherby guarantees, in writing, that the new Vanguard Varmint Special will shoot a 1 ½-inch or better 3-shot group at 100 yards from a cold barrel when used with specific Weatherby factory or premium (non-Weatherby calibers) ammunition. In fact, Weatherby has observed that most of these rifles shoot well under a 1 1/2-inch group. The factory-shot target provides an extra measure of accuracy assurance.

The Vanguard Varmint Special features black metalwork (bead blasted to a matte finish) and a 22-inch #3 contour cold hammer forged steel barrel (.740 muzzle diameter) designed to create a balance between barrel length (velocity), stiffness (accuracy) and portability. The barrel has a recessed target crown for consistent accuracy and protection of the rifling.

Other accuracy-enhancing features include a trigger that is adjustable for let-off weight and sear engagement to match individual preferences. The injection-molded synthetic stock is checkered and sports a tan base coat color with black spiderwebbing in a pebble finish for a non-slip grip. A Monte Carlo cheek piece allows quick eye-to-scope alignment and fast target acquisition. A pressure point in the forearm further enhances accuracy potential. A rubber recoil pad helps reduce felt recoil.

Additional key features:

The Vanguard action has a one-piece forged, fluted bolt body with three ports that allow high pressure gases to escape in the event of an accidental case rupture. The bolt sleeve completely enshrouds the rear of the action to provide protection from high-pressure gases and brass particles, should the case rupture. Two locking lugs allow for a 90-degree bolt lift. To enhance the rifle’s value and provide a sure grip, the bolt knob is knurled.
A one-piece forged and machined receiver with integral recoil lug is designed for exceptional strength and structural integrity.
The bottom metal and floorplate are in one piece and constructed from a combination of steel and a lightweight alloy.
An easy-to-see cocking indicator provides an extra measure of safety.
M16-style claw extractor helps ensure reliable and positive extraction. It extracts and ejects the fired case without the necessity of full bolt retraction.
Measuring 41 1/2 inches in overall length, the Vanguard Varmint Special has a length of pull of 13 5/8 inches. Drop at comb, 3/4-inch; drop at heel, 1 1/8-inch. Weight is approximately 8 1/4 pounds.

The Vanguard Varmint Special is available in .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington and .308 Winchester
