With its debut at SHOT SHOW 2014, the early reception of this design has been very positive. The F 17-L™ features a direct impingement gas system with a rotating locking bolt that is very similar to the original Eugene Stoner design. The direct impingement action is far safer and more reliable than the traditional blow back designs because the 17 WSM produces 33,000 PSI. In fact, the velocity of the 20 grain 17 WSM load is very comparable to the XM855 round for the 5.56 NATO.

For many varmint hunters, this rifle is a dream come true. The 17 WSM provides low recoil, low cost ammunition with devastating ballistics in a handy semi-automatic configuration. Even better, Franklin Armory™ only had to adapt the barrel, bolt carrier group, buffer, and magazine when designing the F 17-L™ to chamber the 17 WSM. Since the majority of the F 17-L™ components are based on the traditional AR style platform, users will benefit from the extensive aftermarket options available.

The initial 17 WSM magazine designed for the F 17-L™ will be limited to 10 rounds. Development of a larger capacity magazine is already in progress. This semi-automatic rifle will likely be available with a 20 round magazine in the near future.

For restricted states such as California, having a semi-automatic rifle chambered in 17 WSM negates the need for a “Bullet Button™” because rimfire rifles are not generally classified as Assault Rifles. Connecticut law would also appear to exempt semi-automatic rimfire rifles, such as the F 17-L™, from their Assault Weapons ban as well.
