NASGW HONORS INDUSTRY ACHIEVEMENTS WITH 2005 AWARDS
Association Celebrates “The Challenge of Change”

What does the challenge of change mean? At the recent National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW) annual meeting and expo it meant celebrating companies that meet the challenges inherent in embracing change head-on. And this unique ability to enthusiastically rise to the occasion of such challenges was honored by the association’s members and board of directors at its annual awards ceremony at the Reno Hilton.

The winners were nominated by their fellow association members and given beautiful collectible custom-carved decoys as awards in four categories: Firearms Manufacturer of the Year, Accessory Manufacturer of the Year, Ammunition Manufacturer of the Year and a new award, the NASGW Chairman’s Award for Industry Leadership. “There were many companies that deserve recognition for their support of the association’s initiatives and whose distribution policies are aligned with our two-tier distribution network,” said Richard Lipsey, chairman of the NASGW board of directors. “We want to partner closely with our vendors and strive together to maintain stability and promote growth in our industry, and these companies are outstanding examples of these goals.” The two-tiered distribution system is comprised of the symbiosis in partnership between the distributors, who take in large amounts of goods direct from the manufacturers, market and promote them and then pass the subsequent savings on in engaging the retail dealers.

The award for Ammunition Manufacturer of the Year went to Hornady Manufacturing. “Members of the association are our biggest customers — they are the backbone of the industry and it was wonderful to receive recognition by our peers,” said Steve Hornady, President. “As long as the NASGW has this show, we’ll be coming.”

The winner of the new Chairman’s Award for Industry Leadership was Sturm, Ruger and Co. Inc. and was accepted by Steve Sanetti, president and chief operating officer for the company. “Our company is fully committed to the two-tiered distribution system — we support the NASGW wholeheartedly and value their service and support,” said Sanetti. “This award is very meaningful, as we consider ourselves to be one of the last true American companies in one of the first American industries and it is absolutely an honor to be rewarded with this kind of recognition from the NASGW.”

The Firearms Manufacturer of the Year award went to Glock, who has been an active participant with the NASGW for more than 16 years. “Each year our company sets a goal for distribution and last year the goal was to build a stronger communication relationship with our sales force and distributors,” said Craig Dutton, director of law enforcement and commercial sales. “Gaston Glock will be thrilled! Nothing means more to him than his customers, and recognition from our peers — that’s truly success.”

Michael’s of Oregon Co. was honored with the Accessory Manufacturer of the Year award, accepted by International Sales Director Steve Michels. “The slogan ‘The Challenge of Change’ really nailed it for us this year, as our company is focusing on building new relationships and looking to the future,” said Michels. “We’ve been a supporter of the NASGW and the two-tiered distribution system since day one and all of our employees have worked hard to make the company a success. We’re very proud to receive this recognition.”
