US Fish & Wildlife Service Proposes Draconian Changes For Regulations Governing CITES Imports
The US Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed the first major update of regulations implementing the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) since 1977. They have positioned the changes as part of an effort to “simplify procedures and reduce paperwork, while helping to ensure effective global wildlife conservation.” However, a careful review of the proposal shows an attempt to implement various anti-hunting measures that will make it more difficult for international hunters to import trophies from abroad. The new regulations could outlaw the resale and donation of certain trophies and even the overseas creation of things like elephant-foot stools, elephant hair bracelets, etc. from legally sport-hunted trophies.
