Limited fall turkey season proposed

A limited fall turkey hunting season for parts of the state, including much of southwest Mississippi, has been tentatively approved by the Mississippi Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

Pending final approval, the season will be Oct. 28 through Nov. 12 and Dec. 2 through 15 in parts of southwest Mississippi, north-central Mississippi and the Delta, said William McKinley, deer program leader for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

The season will apply only to private lands with a minimum of 100 acres. The landowner or leaseholder must complete a fall turkey hunting application and provide a copy of the deed or lease agreement to the department’s district or Jackson office.

Southwest Mississippi counties included are Adams, Amite, Claiborne, Copiah, Franklin, Hinds, Jefferson, Lincoln, Madison, Warren, Wilkinson and Yazoo.

“A minimum of 100 acres must be owned or leased to receive a fall either-sex turkey tag ... one tag per 500 acres or part thereof,” according to a public notice.

Each tag is for a specific property and must be attached to the turkey immediately after it’s killed and remain until it’s processed, McKinley said.

Bag limit is one either-sex turkey per person per fall season. Only archery equipment and shotguns with no larger than No. 2 shot are permitted. Applicants must turn in a harvest report by Jan. 1.

“It is just an attempt to try to provide more opportunity for the sportsmen,” McKinley said of the proposal. “Most every other state out there has a fall turkey hunting season, and it has shown no negative impacts to the population. It has shown that the harvest is made up mostly of juvenile turkeys. In many of those turkeys there’s a higher mortality rate anyway.”

Fall hunting tactics are different than during the spring mating season. Fall hunters kill birds “mostly by scattering flocks and then calling the flock back together,” McKinley said.

On a typical hunt, a hunter may see turkeys in a field, scare them off, give them a little time to settle down, then call them back together with kiki runs, yelps and clucks.

Dogs are not permitted.

State turkey coordinator James Austin said the season is not a first step toward a wide-open statewide fall turkey season.

“We would never feel comfortable just opening this thing statewide and not having any controls over it,” he said.

He also doesn’t expect it to expand to public lands, although the season may eventually extend into other parts of the state.

The commission will receive input from the public until June 20. To comment, write Executive Director, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, P.O. Box 451, Jackson, MS 39205.

PROPOSED SEASON:

• Local counties affected would include Amite, Franklin, Lincoln and Wilkinson.

• The hunt is allowed only on private tracts of at least 100 acres.

• Landowner or leaseholder must apply to wildlife department.

• Bag limit is one either-sex turkey per person per fall season.

• Only shotguns and archery will be allowed.

• Dates are Oct. 28-Nov. 12 and Dec. 2-15.

• Department will receive comments until June 20.
