Commission makes changes for next hunting season
2006-06-04
by Tom Wiest

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission met last week in Nashville and acted on the TWR-Agency proposals for the next hunting season. Following are some of the significant changes that will go into effect in August.

All centerfire rifles calibers will be legal for deer, bear and boar (previously the minimum was .24 caliber); hunters that have filled their ticket can accompany others in the field; hunters on private property can hunt from a stationary all-terrain vehicle (ATV) or any vehicle that cannot be licensed for the road; Sudden Valley Supply trap pads are legalized for offset jaw traps. A proposal to allow deer hunting over bait was not approved.

Changes in seasons include: Extend the otter trapping season in East Tennessee to Jan. 31 and remove the four-per-season bag limit; Franklin and Smith counties move to Unit L; increase or adjust quota and/or non-quota hunts in 15 eastern counties, including Anderson, Blount, Knox and Sevier; redefine antlerless deer hunting boundaries in Anderson County.

Several bear and boar seasons were altered, and many changes were made to the regulations and dates on wildlife management areas statewide; the Oak Ridge WMA has increased quotas and limits on most deer hunts. Complete details on other areas can be found at http://www.tnwildlife.org.

The spring turkey bag limit was clarified as one bearded bird per day, not to exceed four per season, with no more than two from WMAs and refuges; and turkeys taken on all quota hunts are bonus birds.

* The 2006 spring turkey harvest is at 31,178 birds, with a few more late tallies possible. That's an indication of a large, healthy population. Right now is the peak of the turkey hatch and the all-important weather appears to be excellent. A good brood survival this summer could mean a record harvest next spring.

* The smallmouth license plate by TWRA has reached the 1,000 mark in subscriptions one month ahead of deadline and production will begin soon. Orders can still be done through TWRA for a lower number, or just wait for the county court clerks to get them. The cost is $35 and the TWRA appreciates the donation.

* Men and women that are interested in fly fishing will enjoy this Internet Radio program called ``Ask About Fly Fishing.'' At 9 p.m. on Wednesday there will be a live interview with three professional women fly anglers: Lori-Ann Murphy, Pudge Kleinkauf and Diana Rudolph. Listeners will be able to e-mail or call the program with questions for these experts, who are all members of the Federation of Fly Fishers. Log onto http://www.askaboutflyfishing.com for the interview, but there is a host of fishing information there also.

* Beware of dog. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has some K-9 teams in its arsenal of law enforcement tools. These wildlife officer/dog teams undergo nine weeks of training together to be certified to the U.S. Police Crime Association standards in Detection and Area Searches. The TWRA has just installed its fourth K-9 team in Carter County for the upper East Tennessee area. Wildlife Officer Dennis Ward and K-9 Officer Ty will perform special searches for guns, ammunition, wildlife, and people involved in crimes. Other K-9 teams are currently stationed in Campbell, Bradley and Madison counties.

* A reader has asked about the fine for fishing without a license. As usual with these legal things it depends on the severity; but, the judge can assess a fine from $10 to $50 plus court costs (up to $200) for each charge. And each fish in possession can be another charge. So, scofflaws beware.

Luckily, Free Fishing Day is coming on Saturday; and the following week (June 11-16) has free fishing for youth age 13 to 15. Those age 12 and under, resident and non-resident, do not need a fishing license. If you missed the list of special events in the column last week for Saturday, go to http://www.tnwildlife.org.
