New Hiccup For Hunters Headed to Zimbabwe

Still on the subject of airlines, there is a new hiccup for hunters headed toward Zimbabwe. Seems The Netherlands has joined England in implementing a ban on firearm shipment (and transshipment) to that southern Africa country. The bottomline is, you now cannot fly from The Netherlands, or via The Netherlands, with a firearm on a ticket that shows your final destination is Zimbabwe.

We confirmed the above development with Dutch Customs in Gronigen after we received word today of a hunter being refused a transiting permit because he indicated Zimbabwe was his final destination on his application. It made no difference to Dutch Customs that the passenger was initially traveling to South Africa. It was the final destination listed on the ticket that mattered.

The solution to this problem is simple. Either avoid Amsterdam (and London!) on your way to Zimbabwe, or fly to Zimbabwe on two separate tickets: one ticket for your flight to an arrival city outside Zimbabwe and another for your flight from the arrival city on to Zimbabwe. Do not mention the second ticket to anyone in The Netherlands or anyone associated with KLM. We're indebted to Debbie Gracy of Gracy Travel (800-299-8558) for the latter advice.

At this writing, we are not aware that any other European countries are about to implement a ban on shipment (and transshipment) of firearms to Zimbabwe, but we are watching the matter closely. In the meantime, it is worth reminding Africa-bound travelers that you do need a permit to transit The Netherlands with a firearms, no matter what country you are going to. Do not arrive in Amsterdam without one. Click on the hyperlink below for all the details.
