Company wants to bring wild boar hunting to county
By Tom DiStefano, Clarion News writer

CLARION – It was wide-ranging agenda at the June 21 county planning commission meeting, with everything from a grocery store to a crematorium to a game farm for hunting wild boars up for discussion or approval.

The Grizzly Land company of Grove City was given preliminary approval for two buildings on a 208-acre in Paint Township where the company hopes to hold wild boar hunts.

Grizzly will build a 32-by-48-foot hunting lodge with rooms for five guests and a pole building of similar size on the property, which is partly reclaimed surface mine and part forest.

The tract is along the east side of Whisner and Kiser-Wagner roads and borders the west side of State Game Land 72. A 450-foot driveway off Kiser-Wagner will lead to the lodge, the pole building and three small parking lots with a total of 12 spaces.

The tract will be surrounded by an electrified fence to keep European wild boars on the property.

Grizzly Land Company Limited Liability Partnership apparently owns the Double Boar Ranch, where it hopes to hold guided wild boar hunts this winter, according to its website. The website does not give the location of the Double Boar Ranch. Grizzly Land Co. officials could not be reached by press time.

The website states the hunts will not be of the “canned” variety where clients need only to step outside to get a shot at a captive animal, but will be a “true hunting experience” where no more than three hunters, accompanied by a guide, must stalk and locate wild boars, considered be among the most difficult and dangerous of prey in North America.

The website characterizes the wild boar as “The Pennsylvania Grizzly.”

Crematory proposed

Clarion funeral director Roland V. “Rollie” Burns was granted preliminary approval for a 30-by-44-foot building housing a human crematory.

The proposed facility will be located on a four-acre tract at the end of Merle Road in Clarion Township just west of Clarion Borough.

The building will house what is in effect a sophisticated and specialized incinerator – an “Elite” model human cremator made by the Crawford Industrial Group of Orlando , Fla. – designed to burn human remains.

The facility, including a small. three-space parking lot, will be for funeral home personnel only and will not be open to the public.

Grocery store move

The Sharp Shopper discount grocery store is planning to move out of Knox to a location just outside the borough in Beaver Township , according to a proposal submitted for informational purposes only.

Bruce Kirkman, representing Sharp Shopper, told the commission a formal application would be submitted soon asking for preliminary land development approval for a new retail facility near the intersection of Route 338 and Old Knox Road .

The development could include a retail space next door to the proposed new store building, Kirkman said.

Planning commission chairman Jack Snyder, saying he is familiar with the property, asked if there were wetlands issues involved.

Kirkman said wetlands have been identified and developers plan to avoid disturbing them; environmental rules hold that disturbed or removed wetlands must be replaced at another location.

The facility will include parking for 183 vehicles, more than the 171 Kirkman said would be required by county rules.

Kirkman said no modifications (formerly known as variances) from the county planning ordinance would likely be needed. If the development is approved, construction could start in August.

In other actions June 21, the commission approved:

lTwo preliminary land development applications from American Tower Company for changes to cell phone towers operated by Verizon in Toby and Farmington townships.

Both projects include 11-by-30 foot equipment buildings near the towers. The Toby Township tower, along Tower Road west of Route 68 will be made 20 feet higher and antennas will be added.

The Farmington Township tower, along the west side of Route 66 about a mile south of Leeper will not get taller, but more antennas will be added.

lA preliminary subdivision and modification request from Clarion Trinity Development for relief from lot depth-to-width requirements. A lot dedicated to a sewage treatment plant serving the development is to be subdivided from a larger lot and deeded to Monroe Township . The modification is needed because highway construction limits location of lot lines.

lA preliminary land development and relief from setback requirements for two 40-by-90-foot rental storage buildings proposed by Charles and Von Copenhaver along the west side of Truittsburg road and north of the Hawthorn School in hawthorn Borough.

lA preliminary land development application from the Fryburg Sportsman’s Club for an 50-by-72-foor open pavilion on the club’s farm property in Washington Township south of Strobleton. The pavilion will be located about 75 feet from an existing pavilion.
