Hillsboro widens deer hunt
Township Committee opens 600 acres for this year's hunting season.

HILLSBOROUGH -- Four more areas will be available for deer hunting this season, the Township Committee unanimously approved Tuesday.

The changes came after the Hillsborough Wildlife Commission presented its recommendation for permitting deer hunting on 13 public properties, covering 600 acres. The number of hunters permitted in this year's season, which will run from September to February, will rise from 37 to 44.

Wildlife Commission Chairman Robert Matros and township police department liaison Lt. Victor Kubisch told the committee in a joint statement that the 2005-2006 season was "again a success with a 100 percent safety performance."

The four new properties, increasing from nine approved in 2005-2006 to 13 in 2006-2007, include:

Twenty-nine acres off River Road (Old Main Road) with bow hunting only, two permits allowed.

Forty-three acres off Surrey Drive, Mulford Lane and South Woods Road with bow hunting only, two permits allowed.

Twelve acres off River Road and Norz Drive with bow hunting only, one permit allowed.

Thirty acres off Horeshoe Drive with bow hunting only, two permits allowed.
Other changes approved to the 2006-2007 hunting season include:

Eight days available for hunting with a firearm in the Beekman Lane area, adding four days in November.

Mandatory rules for all hunters to wear a safety harness while positioned in elevated tree stands.

Hunters must agree to sign a consent form for a license check.

Research the possibility of using hunting permit revenue for processing and donation of venison to a food bank.
Licensed hunters also must provide proof of $1 million in liability insurance, a verified New Jersey hunting license and pay a $75 permit fee to compete in a lottery drawing for assignment to a property.

Hunters in good standing who were assigned to a Hillsborough property last year do not need to submit to the lottery to hunt on the same property, township business administrator Kevin Davis said.

Davis said hunters are only permitted to hunt on the assigned property, and most properties are restricted to about three to four hunters. Applications for permits are available at the township's clerk's office, he said.

Mayor Carl Suraci said that in 2004, the Township Committee made a commitment to create a safe deer hunt program for residents after numerous traffic accidents due to an increase in the deer population.

"We have lived up to that commitment," he said.

Committeewoman Lisa Nisivoccia said she was impressed with the record of safety of the program.

"I think the licensed hunters who are involved in the program should be congratulated for always putting safety first," she said during Tuesday's meeting. "As long as the hunting program is conducted in a safe manner, within the guidelines set up by the commission and approved by the police department, it should be continued."

Committeeman Paul Drake, liaison to the Wildlife Management Commission, said the commission also recommended nonlethal control measures such as replacement of worn deer crossing road signs or trimming brush on public properties farther back from the road.

The commission stated that in the 2005-2006 deer harvest season, 72 deer were killed. About 26 deer were hunted with firearms and 46 deer were hunted with archery weapons.
