"Sustainable Hunting" Intergroup advocates “alliance” of all rural sectors.

PRESS RELEASE - For immediate release

This meeting in Strasbourg of the "Sustainable hunting, Biodiversity & Countryside activities" Intergroup of the European Parliament was an opportunity for some 20 MEPs from different political groups and Member States to exchange views on how the different rural sectors and activities could best defend their interests and promote the concept of sustainable use of natural resources.

Intergroup President M. EBNER welcomed as guest speakers J. BORCHERT, former German Minister for Agriculture and current President of the German hunters' organisation DJV, and T. HOGGARTH from the British Countryside Alliance.

MEPs were informed about the new "Forum Natur" in Germany that regroups all major countryside sectors - farmers, foresters, landowners, riders, anglers, hunters, etc. - and represents some 6 million rural stakeholders (or at least twice as many voters). Its political message is that countryside people can very well be nature
protectors and at the same time nature users. In the UK, the Countryside Alliance, together with other key organisations, also wants to preserve the rural way of life (including hunting) of many millions of people.

MEPs underlined the significant socio-economic importance of countryside activities and the need for the relevant sectors to work together in order to acquire more political influence as well as to communicate better with society (e.g. with young people).

The next Intergroup meeting, taking place in Strasbourg on 27th September, will deal with the Commission Proposal to amend the 1991 “Firearms” Directive.
