Changing firearms legislation in NI in respect of young people

The Northern Ireland Office have gone out to consultation to consider changing firearms legislation in NI in respect of young people. There are 3 options on the table; 1. To keep the current the age limit of 16 for using shotguns and airguns 2. To reduce the age limit to 12 for supervised access and 3. to bring the Province into line with the rest of GB by scrapping the lower age limit. The Secretary of State, Peter Hain, has indicated that he doesn't see scrapping the age limit as being a likely outcome - some might see this as pre-judging the views of the public!

BASC is not sure whether responses to the consultation will be judged simply on the number of respondents or on the numbers that are represented by respondents, so we believe it is vital for individual BASC members to reply to the consultation, in addition to the formal submission that Assocation will make on behalf of it members. Accordingly, we would strongly urge all members to look at the consultation and write to the Northern Ireland office in support of option 3.
