The Laser Light Module 01 (LLM 01), manufactured by Oerlikon Contraves GmbH (OCG) of Stockach, Germany, is a small-arms active aiming device/tactical white light (a.k.a. laser aiming device/tactical white light) with a target marker and a target illuminator in the near infrared region, and a target marker and flashlight in the visible range. The LLM-01 visible/IR tactical aiming laser/white light was designed and developed specifically for military Special Operations Direct Action missions and law enforcement SWAT operations to allow these operators to engage in rapid, accurate, day and night firing at fast-appearing/fast-moving targets and for overt/covert situational awareness after dark or in dark spaces. With the flick of a switch, it goes from visible white light and red marker (singly or jointly) to infrared illuminator and marker: if your goggles slip off or quit on you, you may switch to visible in a fraction of a second.
Oerlikon Contraves is known worldwide for its targeting systems and fire-control systems. While Oerlikon’s competitors were still hesitating to make the leap from flashlights to red target markers, OCG had designed, manufactured and field-trialed with the German Army the LLM-01, a multiple-source active aiming aid that quickly became standard issue and was nicknamed “the rifleman’s best friend” after extended tours of duty in Bosnia and Afghanistan. The LLM 01 found both acceptance and combat opportunities also with the…
British SAS, in Afghanistan and Iraq. Elite police forces worldwide use the LLM-01. Close partnership with its customers and feedback from the combat field allowed Oerlikon to constantly improve the LLM-01’s performance in the most delicate Special Operations missions as well as in urban warfare where it is truly a force multiplier.
So, what can those 7 ounces of German electro-optical engineering could contribute to a tactical operator’s effectiveness as in close quarters battle (CQB) scenarios? During daytime operations, the LLM-01 can make the transition from bright daylight to the darkness of a shooting house much easier both to the naked eye and to the eye assisted by night-vision goggles. During nighttime operations, the LLM-01’s target markers allow the tactical operator to put a visible or infrared (IR) dot on a moving, low contrast targets such as jack rabbit and hardly ever miss a shot. In a very dark enclosed space, or in a very dark night, the diffused IR illuminator finds quickly the bad guys and the IR target marker makes missing almost impossible. Experienced LLM 01 users have commented on their ability to place a highly-visible red dot on target from non-shouldered firing positions (even one-handed shots) and score fast hits at combat-relevant conditions in both daylight and night conditions with the LLM01.
Standard LLM-01 features include:
* a target marker in the near infrared region
* a target illuminator in the near-infrared region (diffuse and long-range)
* a visible red target marker
* a white light high-intensity flashlight with optional red and IR filter, to cover all basic tactical situations.
*The two target markers can be independently boresighted in azimuth and elevation.
Not-so-basic tactical situations and special operational requirements are covered by different software configurations and a full allowance of accessories going from Shape Generators to Remote Trigger Cables, from simple snap-on tubes (to reduce the chances of off-axis observation of the laser markers) to three types of Laser Heads of different intensity and wavelength to be field-attached to the unit in place of the visible flashlight. Also the Laser Heads’ beam can be boresighted in elevation and azimuth.
The modular design of the LLM 01 allows the quick adaptation of this aiming aid to a variety of weapons, environments and mission requirements, including laser illumination for targeting purposes to better than 2,000 meters.
And, the LLM-01 is the only device in its class providing an easy way to regulate laser power in 5 steps to comply with different eye safety regulations and accommodate training and tactical situations.
The LLM-01 is fastened to its weapon’s rail via an integral quick-clamping weapon adapter tailored to the rail’s configuration. The LLM01 maintains alignment even after repeated removal and fastening events from and to the same weapon.
The LLM-01 is hardened against battlefield EMC, including jamming, electro-magnetic fields, and against electrostatic discharges. The standard LLM 01 is watertight to a depth of 20 meters; for special missions it can be supplied watertight to 30 meters.
The LLM-01 is a modular, microprocessor-configurable, user-friendly, rugged, combat-proven aiming aid indispensable to the warfighter and law enforcer engaged in difficult tactical situations where the first shot on the right target must count.
The LLM01 is truly "the rifleman's best friend", can even be utilized on duty-sized pistols (secondary weapons).
The LLM 01 is in mass production and price competitive with all similar US-made devices.

Ny maskinpistol videreudviklet på Steyer TMP |

The Swiss firm Brugger & Thomet AG is currently manufacturing and marketing an updated/product-improved version of the Steyr TMP submachine gun (after acquiring the rights to it) called the MP9 Submachine Gun (9x19mm)--not to be confused with its namesake, the Ruger MP9 subgun--under their submachine gun line. B&T is marketing the MP9 as a submachine gun/PDW (Personal Defense Weapon). Unlike the Steyr TMP, the select-fire B&T MP9 Submachine Gun/PDW incorporates/integrates a side-folding buttstock for added control while firing. B&T had to re-configure the receiver in order to accomplish this. The addition of a folding buttstock corrects a major flaw of the TMP. The lack of this feature limited the TMP's application/capabilities envelope.
If utilized with armor-piercing (AP) 9mm ammo like the Bofors 9mm HP/M39B round (in Swedish Army Service, and possibly being manufactured by Nammo of Norway) or Russian 7N31 +P+ 65-grain exposed-steel-core round, the B&T MP9 subgun/PDW may be able to...defeat NATO CRISAT armor within limited distances, but this is just speculation at this point. It's been reported that the B&T MP9 runs totally reliably (i.e. functions totally reliably) with ammunition from a "vast array of manufacturers", including the aforementioned M39B round.
The B&T MP9 PDW/Submachine Gun is recoil-operated and fires from the closed-bolt position. It utilizes a rotating barrel locking system. The MP9's receiver is made from a high-strength polymer that's not only impervious to rust/corrosion from saltwater, but also to damage from solvents/cleaning agents.
By the way, Brugger & Thomet AG has created an entire website specifically for the B&T MP9 Submachine Gun.
http://www.mp9.ch/
The B&T MP9 joins other recently designed/developed subgun/PDWs like the Saab Bofors Dynamics CBJ-MS Personal Defense Weapon (PDW), accept the CBJ-MS PDW has the additional advantages of being multi-caliber and storing an additional loaded magazine in its (slanted) vertical foregrip. Saab Bofors Dynamics has developed a special high-velocity armor-piercing 6.5x25mm CBJ cartridge (2,689.5 FPS) specfically for the CBJ-MS PDW/subgun. The 6.5x25mm CBJ round is reportedly a saboted round utilizing either a tungsten or tungsten-cored bullet. This specialized AP round reportedly has the same overall dimensions and firing impulse/felt recoil of 9x19mm ammo that can penetrate NATO CRISAT body armor. It's DefenseReview's understanding that all you have to do to convert the CBJ-MS over from 9mm to 6.5mm is change the barrel out.
B&T might want to consider doing a deal with Saab Bofors Dynamics where they're allowed to use SBD's proprietary 6.5mm AP round, and then making the MP9 subgun/PDW convertable to 6.5x25mm, just like the SBD CBM-MS. Just an idea.
Brugger & Thomet AG (B&T) makes a semi-auto-only version of the MP9 called the B&T TP9. They also make a force-on-force training version that fires Simunition® Fx® marking cartridges called the B&T MP9-FX, and an inert training weapon version called the B&T MP9-M (The "M" is for "manipulation".). B&T is basically a one-stop shop for tactical operators, in that they make a host of accoutrements and accessories for all the weapons they manufacture, including sound suppressors/silencers, tactical handguards, mounting systems, and tactical accessories.
The B&T MP9's receiver can be molded in a variety of colors, including your basic tactical black, olive drab (O.D. Green), desert tan, and arctic white. DefenseReview doesn't know whether or not any camo color schemes will be available in the future.
Brugger & Thomet AG can be contacted by phone at +41 (0)33 334 67 00. Ask for Karl Brügger or Heinrich Thomet. In the meantime, if you want to contact them by email, you can contact someone named Annette at annette@brugger-thomet.ch, who may be a media contact.

Nyt forskæftebi-pods lanceres til Politi/militær |

Grip Pod Systems (G.P.S.) is currently manufacturing and marketing an "Enhanced Target Acquisition System (E.T.A.S.), called, appropriately enough, the Grip Pod System (G.P.S.).
The G.P.S. is a combination vertical foregrip and bipod system that will allow an operator to "go from a CQB position to prone, and have a stable base for aimed firing in place before hitting the ground." The G.P.S. has been receiving some pretty big kudos by some very knowledgable gun people. It can even be seen on FNH USA's SCAR-L (SCAR-Light) and SCAR-H (SCAR-Heavy) prototype/demonstrator weapons. The Grip Pod System is also in current use with military Special Operations units and law enforcement S.W.A.T. teams, including...
U.S. Navy SEAL operators (Naval SPECWAR operators), U.S. Army Special Forces operators, FBI H.R.T. (Hostage Rescue Team). The company also claims that the Grip Pod System is in use with other "unmentionable" alphabet soup agencies.

New super-gun to be tested in Feb
By PAMELA HESS
UPI Pentagon Correspondent
Next month a new high-explosive munition will be fired in Singapore and then tested again by the U.S. Army, heralding what may be a sea change in weaponry: a family of guns that can fire at speeds of up to 240,000 rounds per minute, albeit in short bursts.
A Metal Storm gun of any size -- from a 9mm handgun up to a machine gun size or a grenade launcher -- has no moving parts other than the bullets or munition inside the barrel. Rather than chambering a single slug for each shot - very quickly in the case of machine guns -- the bullets come pre-stacked inside the barrel and can be shot all at once, or one at a time, as the shooter decides through the electronic controls.
Because there are no moving parts, the weapon is less likely to jam, and will presumably need less maintenance.
Lashing many barrels together dramatically increases the number of rounds fired per second. Once fired, however, each spent barrel has to be reloaded.
Its 40mm answer to the MK19 - the current automatic grenade launcher in use by the U.S. military - chambers up to 15 rounds in the barrel at once. They can be squeezed off one at a time or fired almost simultaneously. According to the company, this gives the Metal Storm gun 4,000 times the rounds-on-target capability of the MK19, which has a rapid fire rate of 60 rounds per second.
Starting in 2006 the company will demonstrate its prototypes with applicability that is especially likely to interest the U.S. military. The grenade launching weapon system can be mounted on an unmanned ground combat vehicle, an unmanned aerial vehicle, and might be used as a defense against rocket-propelled grenades and mortars.
Metal Storm's speed allows it to lay down a blinding wall of slugs that can intercept and pulverize incoming enemy fire, according to company CEO David Smith. As long as the grenade or mortar is fired from outside a range of about 50 meters or 162.5 feet and a Doppler radar is in use, a Metal Storm system could be an effective defense, he told UPI.
Closer than that and there is just not time to react.
"But if you are from 50 meters and beyond, if everything can work fast enough -- the radar -- there is enough time mathematically" to shoot down incoming fire, Smith said.
At least 153 U.S. troops have been killed in Iraq by enemy rockets and mortars since the start of the war. Nearly 2,000 have been wounded.
The grenade launcher barrel can also carry less-than-lethal munitions, like small bean- bags, sponge grenades or smoke. On Jan. 16, the Army awarded Metal Storm a $975,000 contract to further develop its non-lethal rounds.
"Our so-called competition is (the) Mk19 - grenade machine gun," Smith said. "It's enormously heavy. It takes six people to carry it into a battlefield scene. It's not mobile.
"But the military has had this transition out of big system warfighting into much lighter, higher firepower that can be carried into battle by individuals or light vehicles. Our guns have no moving parts -- so they have the same amount of fire power at significantly reduced weight ratio."
Metal Storm technology has been under development for about a decade, but a series of small-business innovative research contracts awarded recently by the Department of Energy and the Army means prototypes are now being produced and demonstrated.
"We are to the point we can start providing prototypes. The Army is very, very parochial in how they buy weapon systems," Smith said. "But now we can put it into an actual environment."
The company is also studying whether it can mount a Metal Storm weapon on a small unmanned helicopter, particularly looking at the recoil effect from the gun.
Smith said such a system - deployable down to the squad level -- could be useful in a place like Iraq, where it's a common tactic for insurgents to launch a mortar and then run. By the time soldiers on foot or in a vehicle get to the launch site, the shooters are long gone. But a UAV quickly launched can see where the shooters run to, and if a gun is on board, can shoot at them.
The Australian military is testing a Metal Storm gun of its own, the Advanced Individual Combat Weapon (AICW). The AICW combines both an assault rifle and a 40 mm grenade launcher in a single unit with a common trigger, allowing the shooter to choose which munition he wants to fire without having to refit his weapon. It also allows three grenades to be fired at once, whereas one is the only option in the current generation of weapons.
Metal Storm Inc. will demonstrate a high-explosive munition with a 10-meter (32.5 feet) burst radius in Singapore on Feb. 6, Smith said, and for the Army's Picatinny Arsenal and Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center later that month.

Sikker ferdsel i fjellet
